Years ago, when my son was just a few months old, I decided to go out and buy my first Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) and a 15 pound video camera. Like many parents, I had always wanted to take pictures of my children and capture them at every stage of their lives. Until then, I had only a small, cheap, mainstream digital camera that I carried with me on my travels. But with the advent of my son, I was forced to upgrade my camera. As camera phones became more popular, I mostly put my DSLR away. I preferred to use my smartphone camera because it was always close by and I could take any photo I wanted at any time. But I also wanted the power that a DSLR could provide. It wasn’t until recently that smartphone cameras became more like a DSLR. They now offer enhanced imaging capabilities, more advanced controls and advanced computational software that allow people to take amazing photos without having to carry a bulky, heavy DSLR with them most of the time. At this week’s iPhone 15 Pro launch, Apple stressed that the new iPhone has “the best camera phone we’ve ever made,” and it’s hard to argue with that statement when you consider that many of the features on the new iPhone’s camera match those of today’s most popular DSLR cameras. The iPhone 15 Pro’s first big news is the introduction of Apple’s brand-new A17 Pro processor. This new chip is twice the speed of the A15 in the previous iPhone 14 Pro, and uses a new 3nm process with 19 billion transistorized transistors. The A17 Pro’s CPU core has four high efficiency cores and a 16 core neural engine, with up to 35 trillion operations (TOPS) per second. On the front, the iPhone 15 Pro has a new six-core GPU that powers up to 48 megapixels (7-lens) of the iPhone’s 7-megapixel and 48 megapixels of the 8-megapixels (8-megapixels) of the front-facing camera.
